Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes adalah tokoh detektif fiksi rekaan Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, seorang pengarang dan dokter berkebangsaan Skotlandia. Holmes yang menyebut dirinya sebagai seorang "detektif konsultan" ini dikenal akan ketajaman penalaran logis, kemampuan menyamar, dan keterampilannya dalam menggunakan ilmu forensik untuk memecahkan berbagai kasus.

Holmes, yang pertama kali muncul pada tahun 1887, menjadi tokoh dalam empat novel dan 56 cerita pendek. Novel pertama yang menampilkan sosoknya, Penelusuran Benang Merah, dimuat di Beeton's Christmas Annual pada tahun 1887. Sementara itu, novel kedua, Empat Pemburu Harta, dimuat di Lippincott's Monthly Magazine pada tahun 1890. Tokoh ini semakin populer setelah cerita pendeknya dimuat secara berseri di The Strand Magazine, diawali dengan Skandal di Bohemia pada tahun 1891 yang berlanjut sampai tahun 1927 dengan tambahan dua novel. Novel dan cerita pendek tersebut berlatar waktu tahun 1880-an hingga 1914.

Hampir semua cerita petualangan Holmes dinarasikan oleh sahabat karibnya, dr. John H. Watson, kecuali dua yang diceritakannya sendiri (Kasus Prajurit Berwajah Pucat dan Misteri Surai Singa) serta dua yang ditulis dengan sudut pandang orang ketiga (Kasus Batu Mazarin dan Salam Terakhir). Dalam dua cerita, Ritual Keluarga Musgrave dan Kapal Gloria Scott, Holmes awalnya memberitahu Watson apa yang diingatnya mengenai kasus tersebut, lalu dikembangkan oleh Watson. Novel pertama dan keempatnya, Penelusuran Benang Merah dan Lembah Ketakutan, masing-masing memiliki bagian penceritaan ulang dalam sudut pandang orang ketiga serbatahu yang tidak diketahui oleh Holmes maupun Watson.
